May 21, 2012

There are no assignments or events posted for today.

We are in our second year of our Elgin reading grant.  The assessments which are done at the beginning, middle, and end of each year are proof that is definitely is improving the reading skills of our students.  Our latest assessment (MAPS) in December again showed consistent improvement in students' reading skills.  This is a lot of very hard work on the part of teachers.  Additionally, PARENTS, PLEASE READ WITH YOUR CHILD 20 MINUTES EACH DAY.  This, too, is research-based and proven to help your child learn to read.  We can work together to give your child the precious gift of reading.

We've also been awarded a grant through Lowe's with which a gazebo was built at the side of our building near the middle school.  Our custodians have done all the work, and have labored so hard!  The results are astonishing!  Please come by and see it.

Lowe's Store at Claypool Hill also gave us another gift through their Lowe's Heroes grant.  Over our Christmas break, one of our parents, Valerie Hurt, who also works for Lowe's, saw a need at our school and acted on it.  She spearheaded a project which resulted in Lowe's paying for supplies and labor of a white picket fence out back where students line up to get in and out of vehicles, and a second fence in front of the school entrance.  This is not only an aesthetic, eye-appealing addition that replaces our blue ropes and rusted poles, but students are safer, as they now are unable to dart out for their ride.

Also, we are in the process of a county-wide school accreditation.  A team will visit our county in April, and teachers and administrators are diligently preparing for this process from now until then.

Parents and Students, you may contact me through the Parents' Tab at the top of the page if you have any questions or concerns.

Also, feel free to call my office at 276 964-4112. Cool
