The Youth in Government Club's main purpose is to prepare students for the trip to Richmond every fall for the Model General Assembly. Every year, students from Tazewell High School draft mock legislation and prepare to debate their bills on the floor of the Virginia General Assembly in front of youth legislators. The Model General Assembly (MGA) is comprised of high school students interested in government from around the state of Virginia.
MGA is divided into two branches of government: the legislative and the executive. The legislative branch is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives, which and formed entirely of students. A student elected Youth Governor manages the executive branch, with his own cabinet.
Throughout the three day assembly, students are engaged in debate. They learn about the issues affecting our state and our nation and even play a role in making sure those issues are addressed. For more information on the Model General Assembly, please visit the Virginia YMCA website.
